Cost Principle

The Cost Principle, also known as the historical cost principle, is an accounting rule under U.S. GAAP that assets are recorded and reported on the balance sheet at their original purchase price, rather than at current market value.

Example: Example: A company acquires equipment for $2 million. The asset is recorded at $2 million on the balance sheet and depreciated over its useful life.
