Deferred Tax Liability

Deferred Tax Liability (DTL) is the amount of income taxes that will be payable in future periods because certain items are recognized differently for financial reporting and for tax purposes.

Example: A company records straight-line depreciation for its financial statements while using accelerated tax depreciation; the resulting timing difference creates a deferred tax liability that will reverse in future periods when the tax depreciation catches up.
