Downside Deviation

Downside deviation is a risk metric that measures the dispersion of returns below a chosen threshold, treating returns above the threshold as not contributing to the measure.

Example: An analyst computes downside deviation for two portfolios using a MAR of 2% and finds that Portfolio A's downside deviation is lower than Portfolio B's, indicating less frequent or less severe shortfalls relative to the MAR.
