Earnings Per Share

Earnings Per Share (EPS) is the portion of a company's profit allocated to each outstanding share of common stock. It is calculated by dividing net income by the weighted average number of common shares outstanding during a period.

Example: In its latest quarterly report, Company X reported net income of $40 million and a weighted-average 20 million shares outstanding, yielding basic EPS of $2.00.
