Natural Rate of Unemployment

The natural rate of unemployment (NRU) is the level of unemployment that persists when the economy is producing at its potential and inflation remains stable; it comprises frictional and structural unemployment and is not zero.

Example: If the NRU is estimated at 4.0% and the current unemployment rate is 4.3%, there is a modest cyclical unemployment component suggesting an output gap exists.
