Notional Principal

The notional principal (or notional amount) is the reference dollar amount used to calculate payments in a derivative contract; it is typically not exchanged at settlement.

Example: In a plain vanilla interest rate swap with a notional principal of $50 million, one party pays a floating rate and the other a fixed rate; payments are based on the rate applied to the notional amount and the net difference is exchanged.
