Operating expenses are the costs a business incurs through its ongoing operations to generate revenue, excluding the cost of goods sold.
Example: Example: A company reports revenue of $500 million, cost of goods sold (COGS) of $180 million, and operating expenses (which include SG&A and D&A) of $140 million, resulting in operating income of $180 million.
