Variation Margin

The daily amount of cash or other eligible collateral exchanged to reflect changes in the market value of an open derivative position, as positions are marked to market.

Example: A trader holds a long futures position; after a trading day, the contract's price falls, reducing the position's value. The trader must post variation margin to reflect the loss, while the counterparty receives a credit to its margin account.
